Indiana State Child Services Case Management System Application

Design Charrette

The UX Challenge

Design a new child services case management platform to replace the state’s current 20+ year old system. Turnaround time for this request was one week which meant numerous quick ideation sessions with a visual designer and a child services program subject matter expert (SME).

The UX Approach

Before jumping into design, I first needed to understand why this new system was necessary. I performed a quick competitive analysis to answer two questions:

  • What’s missing from the current child services system?
  • What are key attributes that must be included?

I found the current system was overloaded with disparate details buried in webpages that made it difficult to find case information quickly. From here, I decided:

  • Project Goal: Improve case management by highlighting priority case details, creating an information architecture hierarchy through menus and tabs, and making data entry more efficient.
  • My Role: UX design/wireframes
  • Tools: Sketch, InVision

The UX Impact and Final Product

Content and design layout are usually decided during the planning/discovery stage of a project with input from the client. However, as this was a design charrette, it was left up to our three person team to identify potential priority features and ease of case management workflow. I created wireframes for eight “essential” desktop webpages and passed those over to the visual designer for the final step; putting all the art direction, content, and wireframes together for a prototype.

Elevating the Human Experience, one digital transformation at a time.
